The Austrian Pinscher is a sturdy, medium farm dog with a wedge-shaped head, folded or button ears, and a taut, athletic body. The coat is short and harsh, and the tail is often carried high.

A farm watchdog of medium size with a short-to-medium coat and a serious bark; better in a house and yard than in a quiet flat.

The Austrian Pinscher, or Osterreichischer Pinscher, is an old farm and yard dog from Austria. It was used to kill vermin, drive stock, and watch the homestead. Numbers fell in the 20th century, and the breed was rebuilt from remaining farm dogs. The UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Temperament

This is an alert, territorial dog that bonds closely to its household. It is typically lively with its own people and reserved with strangers. It needs a job and does poorly when left idle in a yard.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. The breed was selected to think on a farm, so it will test soft or changing rules.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly brush. Give this active farm dog a daily outing and a chance to patrol.

The Austrian Pinscher is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean and ask breeders about hip scores.
