The Beauceron is a large, well-muscled herding dog with a long head, dropped or semi-dropped ears, and a short black-and-tan coat. Double dewclaws on the hind legs are a breed trait. The outline is that of a sober French shepherd, not a flashy show dog.

The Beauceron, or Berger de Beauce, is a French herding and guard dog from the plains around Paris. It drove sheep and cattle and watched the farm. The AKC places it in the Herding Group; the UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Color: Black and tan (bas rouge), or harlequin (gray, black, and tan)
Coat: Short, dense, and harsh on the body, with a fine undercoat

Temperament

This is a confident, serious working dog. It is typically loyal to its household, watchful with strangers, and too much dog for a first-time owner who wants a soft pet. It needs work, not just a fenced yard.

Training

Start early and be consistent. The Beauceron is intelligent and will take over if the rules are unclear.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. This large herder needs a daily job or a long, structured walk.

Shedding

Moderate; heavier seasonally.

Health

Beaucerons may develop hip dysplasia and bloat. Keep the dog lean and do not exercise hard right after meals.
