The Black Russian Terrier is a large, powerful, black-coated working dog with a bearded face, dropped ears, and a sturdy, slightly rectangular body. The coat is tousled rather than silky.

A large, bearded working dog for a house and yard with training; the coat is work, he is a serious guardian, and he is too much dog for a small apartment.

The Black Russian Terrier was created in the Soviet Union after World War II at the Red Star Kennel, from Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale, and other working breeds. It was meant as a military and guard dog, not as a British terrier. The AKC places it in the Working Group; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is a confident, protective working dog. It is typically calm with its own family and reserved with strangers. It is too much dog for an owner who wants a soft companion and no training.

Training

Start early, be consistent, and keep the dog working. Poorly trained Black Russian Terriers become pushy.

Care and grooming

The coat mats if it is not brushed and trimmed on a schedule. Plan on regular grooming and a daily walk with a purpose.

Shedding

Low to moderate; loose hair is held in the coat.

Health

Black Russian Terriers may develop hip and elbow dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Ask breeders about joint and eye testing.
