The Caucasian Mountain Dog is a massive livestock guardian with a heavy head, small dropped ears, and a thick coat that can be long or medium. The body is powerful and slightly rectangular, built for cold mountains.

The Caucasian Mountain Dog, or Caucasian Shepherd, is a livestock guardian from the Caucasus mountains. It was kept with flocks against wolves and strangers. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Height: Male: 27–30 inches; Female: 25–28 inches
Weight: Male: 110–170 pounds; Female: 90–150 pounds
Color: Any except solid black or liver; commonly gray, fawn, brindle, or pied
Coat: Double; medium or long, with a heavy ruff and a dense undercoat
Lifespan: 10–12 years
Litter size: 5–10 puppies

Temperament

This is a territorial, independent guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and suspicious of strangers. It is not a first-dog breed and does poorly in a small, busy yard.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm. The breed was selected to decide when a threat is real, so it will not work like a soft companion dog.

Care and grooming

Brush often, especially when the undercoat blows. Grow this giant slowly and do not run it hard after meals.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

As with other giant guardians, hip dysplasia and bloat can occur. Keep the dog lean.
