The Ibizan Hound is a tall, racy warren hound with large erect ears, a long head, and either a short or a wire coat. The outline is that of a primitive rabbit hunter, built to jump and to see over cover.

A lean rabbit hound who is quiet and clean indoors and can live in an apartment if given safe sprints; short or wire coat and a soft house voice.

The Ibizan Hound, or Podenco Ibicenco, is a rabbit dog from the Balearic Islands of Spain. It hunts by scent, sight, and hearing. The AKC places it in the Hound Group; the UKC classes it as a Sighthound & Pariah.

Color: White, red, or a mix of white and red; the red may be light or deep

Temperament

These hounds are typically alert, independent, and tied to their hunter. They can be reserved with strangers and have a strong prey drive. They need more running room than a typical house pet of the same size.

Training

Be patient and use a long line. A rabbit in motion will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly wipe; the wire coat needs occasional brushing. Protect this thin-skinned breed from cold.

Health

Ibizan Hounds are generally hardy. As with other lean sighthounds, use care with anesthesia and keep them from becoming overweight.
