The Japanese Terrier is a small, racy, smooth-coated terrier, usually white with black and tan markings on the head. The ears are high-set and folded, and the outline is elegant rather than cobby.

A small, short-coated ratter who fits an apartment if walked; little grooming and a brighter voice than his elegant outline suggests.

The Japanese Terrier was developed in Japan from Smooth Fox Terriers and small native dogs, first in the port cities. It is a companion and ratter more than a heavy earth dog. The UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Temperament

These terriers are typically lively, attached to their people, and alert. They can be vocal and may chase small animals. They need more activity than their size suggests.

Training

They learn quickly and get bored with repetition. Keep sessions short and socialize them while they are young.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs only a weekly wipe. Use a harness on walks.

The breed is generally hardy. Patellar luxation and dental crowding can occur in small terriers; keep the dog lean.
