The Komondor is a giant livestock guardian covered in long, white corded coat that reaches the ground. The head is large, the tail is long, and the outline disappears under the cords once the coat is mature.

A flock guardian whose corded coat is a commitment; rural space, night barking, and no fit for a small apartment or casual grooming.

The Komondor is a Hungarian flock guardian. The white cords camouflaged the dog among sheep and protected it from wolf bites and weather. The AKC places it in the Working Group; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is an independent, territorial guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and suspicious of strangers. It is not a first-dog breed and does poorly as a yard ornament with no job.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm. The coat is not a substitute for training.

Care and grooming

The cords must be separated by hand as they form and kept clean and dry. This is not a wash-and-go coat. Plan on real time, not a quick brush.

Shedding

Low once the coat is fully corded; loose hair stays in the cords.

Health

Komondorok may develop hip dysplasia, bloat, and hot spots if the cords stay wet. Dry the coat thoroughly after bathing.
