The Landseer (ECT) is a giant, rectangular water and draft dog with a long white coat marked with black, a broad head, and a well-feathered tail. It is built like a working Newfoundland, not like a black-and-white show trim only.

A large black-and-white water dog for a house and cool climate; a heavy coat that sheds, a generally steady voice, and size that wants more than a studio walk.

The Landseer (European Continental Type) is the black-and-white Newfoundland-type dog recognized in Europe as a separate breed from the Newfoundland. It was named for the painter Sir Edwin Landseer. In North America the same color is often still registered as a Newfoundland.

Temperament

These dogs are typically gentle with their household, watchful rather than sharp, and fond of water. They are giant dogs and need training and space. They do poorly in heat.

Training

Start early and keep sessions calm. A giant that is allowed to lean on people becomes hard to live with.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week. Grow puppies slowly and keep adults lean.

Shedding

Moderate to heavy; heavier seasonally.

Health

As with other giant water dogs, hip dysplasia, heart disease, and bloat can occur. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
