The Lapponian Herder is a medium, rectangular herding spitz with erect ears, a fairly long coat, and a tail that hangs at rest and rises when the dog is at work. The outline is that of a reindeer herder, not a plush companion spitz.

A Finnish reindeer herder for a house and cold weather; a dense coat, a watchful bark, and daily work or long walks.

The Lapponian Herder, or Lapinporokoira, is a Finnish reindeer-herding dog from Lapland. It works the herds by barking and circling rather than by a silent eye. The UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Temperament

These herders are typically alert, energetic, and tied to their handler. They can be noisy and reserved with strangers. They need a job, not just a backyard.

They learn quickly and enjoy herding and agility work. Keep sessions varied.
