The Large Vendeen Griffon Basset is a long-backed, short-legged version of the Vendeen griffon, with a harsh coat, a bearded face, and dropped ears. It is longer in the leg than the Small Vendeen Griffon Basset.

A short-legged Vendeen hound with a rough coat and a musical bay; slow country miles suit him better than a city hallway.

The Large Vendeen Griffon Basset, or Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, is a French scenthound from the Vendee, used on hare and other game. The AKC lists the breed in FSS in this database; the UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: White with black, sable, or orange markings; tricolor and grizzle also occur
Coat: Harsh and not too long, with a beard and eyebrows

Temperament

These bassets are typically outgoing, noisy on a track, and determined once a scent is found. They need more walking than a short yard break. They will follow a trail out of an unfenced yard.

Train the recall early and use a long line.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly and clean the ears. Keep this long-backed dog lean.

Moderate.

Health

As with other bassets, ear infections and back strain can occur. Limit jumping off furniture.
