The Norwegian Hound is a medium, rectangular scenthound with a distinctive blue-marbled or black-and-tan coat, dropped ears, and a long head. Many dogs show a slipped (not fully pigmented) eye rim, which is part of the Dunker type.

The Norwegian Hound, or Dunker, is a Norwegian scenthound developed by Wilhelm Dunker in the 19th century. It is used on hare. The merle-like blue coat is a breed trait. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

These hounds are typically friendly with their hunter and determined on a track. They have a musical voice and will follow a scent out of an unfenced yard. They need more running than a short walk.

Train the recall early and use a long line.

Wipe the short coat and clean the ears after work in cover.

Moderate.

Health

Deafness can appear in some merle-type lines. Responsible breeders pay attention to hearing. Ear infections are also common after field work.
