The Old English Bulldogge is a medium, athletic reconstruction of the old working bulldog, with a broader head than a Bullmastiff mix would suggest, a short coat, and a less extreme face than the modern English Bulldog.

A muscular, short-coated house dog for a cool climate; little grooming, a modest voice, and more bulk than a tiny flat usually wants.

The Old English Bulldogge is a modern American reconstruction meant to look like the 18th- and 19th-century working bulldog while breathing more easily than the show English Bulldog. Lines vary by registry.

Temperament

These dogs are typically confident and people-oriented, with a stronger working drive than a modern English Bulldog. They need training and exercise. They can be dog-selective.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules clear. Strength without training is a problem.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat weekly. Keep the dog lean.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

Health is better in many lines than in extreme English Bulldogs, but hip dysplasia and cherry eye can still occur. Ask for health testing rather than a romantic history.
