The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a medium, rectangular herding dog with a long, shaggy coat that covers the eyes, a bearded face, and a docked or naturally short tail in some dogs. The outline is that of a rustic herder, not a trimmed show Poodle.

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a herding breed from the Polish plains. It moved sheep and watched the farm. The AKC places it in the Herding Group; the UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Temperament

PONs are typically lively, watchful, and tied to their handler. They can be reserved with strangers and may try to herd children or other pets. They need a job.

Training

They learn quickly and remember inconsistent rules. Start herding or obedience work early.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so it does not mat over the eyes and hindquarters.

Shedding

Moderate; heavier when the undercoat blows.

Health

Polish Lowland Sheepdogs may develop hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Ask breeders about hip and eye testing.
