The Portuguese Pointer is a dog of medium proportions, and well-balanced, almost square in build.

A short-coated gundog for an active household; little coat work, a field voice, and daily running or hunt time.

A Portuguese Pointer was developed as a gun dog. It is one of several pointing breeds and is mainly used in gray partridge hunting. This breed is accepted by the American Rare Breed Association.

Color: Yellow or light brown, both unicolored or with white markings
Coat: Short and coarse; velvety texture on the ears and face

Temperament

These pointers are typically gentle at home and earnest in the field. They want to work with their handler and need more exercise than a casual companion of the same size.

Training

Keep sessions short and consistent. Start bird manners early.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat after field work and clean the ears.

Shedding

Low; the short coat is easy to wipe down.

Health

Portuguese Pointers are generally hardy gundogs. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are the issues most often watched in this type of pointing breed.
