The Sarplaninac is a large livestock guardian with a dense iron-gray or tan double coat, a strong head, and dropped ears. The outline is slightly longer than tall, built for mountain flocks.

The Sarplaninac is a flock guardian from the Sar Mountains of the western Balkans. It lived with sheep against wolves and thieves.

Temperament

This is an independent, territorial guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and reserved with strangers. It needs space and a role, not a busy suburban sidewalk.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

As with other large guardians, hip dysplasia can occur. Keep the dog lean.
