The Schapendoes is a medium, lightly built herding dog with a long, slightly wavy coat, a topknot over the eyes, and a long plumed tail. The movement is springy, and the outline is that of a rustic sheepdog.

A shaggy Dutch herder for an active house and yard; the coat needs brushing, he has a watchful bark, and he wants a job more than a sofa.

The Schapendoes is the same Dutch herding breed listed elsewhere on the site as the Dutch Schapendoes. It was used on flocks in the Netherlands and was rebuilt after World War II. The UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Temperament

These sheepdogs are typically lively, friendly, and tied to their handler. They can be clownish at home and serious in the field. They need a job and do poorly when left idle.

Training

They learn quickly and enjoy agility and herding work. Keep sessions varied.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so the topknot and hindquarters do not mat.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Progressive retinal atrophy has been reported in some lines; ask breeders about eye testing.
