The Shiloh Shepherd is a giant, German Shepherd-type dog with a broader head, a straighter back, and either a smooth or a plush coat. The outline is longer and heavier than a working-line German Shepherd.

A large shepherd-type for a house with training and space; a heavy coat that sheds, a watchful bark, and too much dog for a casual apartment.

The Shiloh Shepherd is a modern American type created to produce a larger, calmer German Shepherd-style companion. It is not recognized by AKC, CKC, or UKC in this table. Lines vary; treat each kennel as its own program.

Weight: Male: 110–140 pounds; Female: 80–120 pounds
Color: Sable, black and tan, bi-color, or solid black; white is not typical of the original program

Temperament

These dogs are typically people-oriented and less sharp than some working German Shepherds. They are still giant herding-type dogs and need training and space.

Training

Start early and keep the rules clear. A giant that is allowed to lean on people becomes hard to live with.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. Grow puppies slowly.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

As with other giant shepherd types, hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and degenerative myelopathy can occur. Ask for health testing rather than a romantic history.
