The Spanish Water Dog is a medium, rustic water and herding dog covered in tight, woolly curls. The ears are dropped, the tail may be a natural bob, and the outline is slightly longer than tall.

A curly herding-and-water dog who can share a house if worked; a coat that is clipped, not brushed, and a watchful bark.

The Spanish Water Dog is an Andalusian and Cantabrian working dog used to herd goats and sheep and to retrieve from water. The UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

These dogs are typically loyal, watchful, and tied to their handler. They can be reserved with strangers and need a job. A bored Spanish Water Dog will invent work.

Training

They learn quickly and remember inconsistent rules. Start herding or retrieving work early.

Care and grooming

Do not brush the curls out; shear the coat a few times a year and keep it clean.

Shedding

Low; loose hair is held in the curls.

Health

Spanish Water Dogs may develop hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy in some lines. Ask breeders about testing.
