The Volpino Italiano is a small, square Italian spitz with a long stand-off white (or red or champagne) coat, small triangular erect ears, and a tail curled over the back. The outline is that of a lively watchdog, not a toy Pomeranian copy.

A small Italian spitz who can live in an apartment if you accept his bark; a stand-off coat that sheds and a bright hallway voice.

The Volpino Italiano is an old Italian companion and watchdog, kept on farms and in palaces. It is a true spitz, not a miniature Pomeranian.

Temperament

Volpini are typically alert, attached to their people, and vocal. They notice everything and will comment on it. They need more activity than a quiet lap-dog life.

Training

They learn quickly and will take advantage of soft rules. Keep sessions short.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows.

Shedding

Seasonal and moderate to heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Patellar luxation and eye problems can occur in small spitz; keep the dog lean.
